Are you a writer?
A writer is a person for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.
-Thomas Mann
I’ve known since the third grade that I wanted to be a writer. Third grade is when I found The Boxcar Children series and mystery novels and fell in love with books. I also found friends who were willing to play along when I said, “Let’s write a book together!”
But then I got older and wondered why it was sometimes so hard for me to write. I decided that I wasn’t cut out for writing, no matter how much I wanted it. The turning point happened when I read the above quote by Thomas Mann and realized that everyone struggles with writing at times – especially writers.
It wasn’t until recently that I got the courage to start my own freelance writing business and write for a living full-time. When I started, I knew next to nothing about finding writing jobs, queries, marketing myself, taxes, and the many other things a freelance writer needs to know. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m excited about sharing my journey and the things I have learned about becoming a successful freelance writer.

Writing is the daily practice of flaying yourself alive for a line of dialogue, a perfect turn of phrase, a nice, tight opening line. The first draft is fun, a burst of inspiration and hope…and then the sheer drudgery of editing, shaping words into sentences that cry and sing like an old blues standard. I’ve been at it professionally for over 20 years and I can tell you it’s rarely fun, rarely rewarding but, as Robert Penn Warren says “It’s the pain I can’t live without…”
Cliff – Thanks for your comment! I wasn’t expecting anyone to find my blog so quickly, so I appreciate you stopping by.
I love your description of writing because it’s so true. It’s a LOT less glamorous than I thought it would be, and definitely a lot harder. But I love it at the same time and couldn’t stop writing if you paid me to.
Thanks again for your thoughts.
Well, I ain’t having any fun at all with this writing thing, but at least I’m making a lot of money.

I LOVE that quote! Would you mind if I put it on my list for an upcoming “Freelance Inspiration” post? (I’ll be sure to mention that you intorduced me to it.)
Lorna – Of course I don’t mind! Feel free to use it. And thanks for the mention.
That’s weird- I made that decision in third grade as well. I used to make lists of my future publishers by studying the spines of my chapter books.
LS – Third grade must be an influential time…That’s cute that you were already looking at publishers at that age!
I just discovered WordPress and this “are-you-a-writer.
I am definitely a writer…and a poet. I remember the the title line if my first poem (at age eight), and at nearly seventy-five, I’m still at it.
I have helped and encourage many other writers over time and it has always given me great pleasure.
Funny thing is, I don’t feel very differently about (my) writing than I did then. Perhaps you know… a voice goes out into the universe and who hears it, hears it.
